In Orlando, the warm, low golden light before sunset lasts only about 30–35 minutes — shorter than most people think. Aim for the proposal to happen about 20 minutes before sunset, and start your session about an hour before.
Light is the one thing you can’t fix in editing. The same spot looks flat at 4 p.m. and glowing at 7:30. Here’s when golden hour actually happens in Orlando, month by month, and how I plan a proposal around it.
Golden hour is shorter than an hour here
“Golden hour” means the stretch when the sun sits low in the sky — warm, soft, flattering light with long shadows. Central Florida is close enough to the equator that the sun sets steeply, so that window is short: the warmest light lasts roughly 30–35 minutes before sunset. Miss it by twenty minutes and you’re in harsh light or near-darkness.

“Golden light starts” is when the sun drops to about 6° above the horizon. Daylight saving time starts March 8 and ends November 1, 2026 — which is why March sunsets jump an hour later and November’s drop.
How I plan the timeline
- About 60 minutes before sunset: I’m in position, hidden, with the light metered.
- About 30 minutes before: you start the walk-up. This gives you slack if parking or traffic runs late.
- About 20 minutes before: the proposal — right in the warmest light.
- Sunset and after: portraits with the ring, then the glow afterward. At city spots the blue hour right after sunset — deep blue sky, lights coming on — is a second chance for dramatic photos.
Watch the closing times
This catches a lot of people: many of the prettiest spots close at dusk or earlier. Kraft Azalea Garden is open 8 a.m. to dusk — so it’s an evening spot, never a sunrise one. Some county parks and gardens close their gates in the early evening, which in June and July can be before sunset. When we plan your spot, we check its hours against the sunset for your exact date.
What about sunrise?
Sunrise proposals are gorgeous and quiet, but most parks and gardens aren’t open yet. The best sunrise option near Orlando is an Atlantic beach — Cocoa Beach or New Smyrna Beach, about an hour away — where the sun comes up over the ocean. See our beach proposal guide.
